Week 14 – Commencement of Second Trimester

Congratulations to the expectant mother for the beginning of the second trimester. You are now in the fourth month of pregnancy and only five months are left for completing your pregnancy. Some of you might need maternity clothes during this time while others may need it later. You might be feeling more hungry and energetic than earlier.

Baby at This Time

As the measurement of American pregnancy Association, your baby is now more than 4 inches long and its weight is a bit less than 2 ounces i.e. 0.5 Kgs. Your baby is continuously growing at this stage. The length of its arms is increasing and started to become proportionate with the rest of the body. The liver starts producing bile and spleen produces red blood cells.

At this stage, Baby now begins to respond to bright light that penetrates the mother’s abdominal wall.  A startle reaction by baby can be observed when a bright light shines on the mother’s abdomen

Changes in Your Body

It’s happy news to hear that you will become less nauseated during this time and will have lesser trips of urination.

However, you might experience pain in both sides of the abdomen it is known as round ligament pain. This is a normal symptom of pregnancy and happens due to the growth of the uterine wall. Your breast grows during this time and your appetite will also increase.

You may find that your blood vessels can be seen really under the skin especially at your feet and legs. This is known as varicose veins and occurs due to the extra blood flow in your body.

Due to the high levels of oestrogen and progesterone, it increases the blood flow towards the mucus membranes in your body. It includes the nose too which led towards swelling of the nasal glands causing difficulty to breathe.

Your Plan For This Week

You are feeling that you are having extra mood swings then do not worry it is common during the pregnancy. Remain stress-free and always be excited about your baby this will help you in coping up with your mood swings. Some time to yourself and do the things which make you happy. Take proper care of yourself and eat healthy foods. At this time you might attend the prenatal classes it will give you proper support in your journey towards Maternity.
