Dad Diary –  Stepping Into The 2nd Trimester

When our doctor said that the 2nd trimester had started, I was a little perplexed and at the same time was wondering what to expect from this phase. If the 1st trimester brought along morning sickness, extreme mood swings and immense fatigue, what would the 2nd trimester accompany with! When I shared my concern with our doctor, she said that the 2nd trimester was going to be the easiest phase of our pregnancy and my wife would start feeling energetic like the old times. I was relieved, to say the least.

Initial weeks were easy, to be precise. But after a few weeks, my wife started developing a strange problem of acidity. And it was common for almost every night. When I found out that it had become a regular affair, I called the doctor. She ensured that all these issues with gas, heartburn, acidity, constipation were nothing but the symptoms of 2nd trimester. As the baby grows, it puts some pressure on the mother’s digestive tract, which causes all the discomfort. Our doctor also suggested my wife to drink a lot of water to keep her digestive system as normal as possible. By that time, I pretty much understood that it was not going to be as smooth as I was expecting.

Just as I thought, as our baby started growing, it brought along a lot of health problems for its mother. Backache and breeding gums were the major ones to mention here. It’s very common that pregnant women gain some weight during the 2nd trimester, which results into putting pressure on the back. As the father, I did everything from arranging comfortable sitting and sleeping setup to rubbing and messaging the sore points to comfort my wife. Whenever she needed anything, I made sure to make it available right in front of her, so she did not have to bend her back. Trust me. All of these worked amazingly well to offer her comfort.

My wife was also suffering from bleeding gums during this period. When I consulted my doctor, she said that it’s very common among pregnant women, as it’s caused by the hormone changes. Again, hormones! However, our doctor also alarmed us not to ignore it, as it’s proved that pregnant women with periodontal diseases are more prone to deliver a low birth weight baby and often go into premature labor. So, I decided to take her for dental checkup regularly. After a few sittings, the dental problems were almost gone.

As my wife started putting on some weight and of course due to the baby bump, it was time for maternity shopping. I accompanied her. While we were returning from the shopping center, I noticed something. My wife was sitting still in the car. When I asked her, she said that she was feeling something in her belly. Something that was moving. Our doctor already advised us that we would be able to feel our baby soon. It was the best moment ever. It was our baby that was moving and kicking in my wife belly. Yes, 2nd trimester truly is a fantastic stage, just as our doctor told us.
