The \u201cSave the Sibling\u201d initiative was created to bring hope to families facing such challenges\u2014hope built on advanced science, medical expertise and compassion. This is the inspiring journey of the initiative and how it transformed the life of a young boy named Akshoy.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-birth-of-a-vision-with-purpose\">The Birth of a Vision With Purpose<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Save the Sibling was launched as a unique collaboration between three major institutions in Kolkata:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Renew Healthcare&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cordlife Sciences India Pvt. Ltd.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>HCG EKO Cancer Centre&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><p align=\"justify\">Their shared mission was to help families conceive a healthy, HLA\u2011matched \u201csavior sibling\u201d through IVF and advanced genetic testing. Stem cells collected from the newborn\u2019s cord blood could then be used to treat an older child suffering from a severe genetic disorder. This approach eliminated the uncertainty of finding a naturally matched donor.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"why-the-program-matters\">Why the Program Matters?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><p align=\"justify\">Every year, thousands of children in India are born with life\u2011threatening blood disorders such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cordlifeindia.com\/blog\/treating-thalassemia-with-stem-cell\/\">Beta\u2011Thalassemia<\/a> Major, Fanconi Anaemia, Tay\u2011Sachs and certain forms of leukaemia. For many of these children, a hematopoietic stem cell transplant is the only potential cure. The challenge is that successful transplantation requires an exceptionally close HLA match\u2014something rarely found outside the immediate family.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><p align=\"justify\">In many cases, families have had to rely on chance, hoping a future child would naturally be a match. Save the Sibling program changes this by using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cordlifeindia.com\/blog\/ivf-pregnancy\/\">IVF pregnancy<\/a> along with Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) and Preimplantation Genetic Matching (PGM). His early years were spent undergoing frequent blood transfusions\u2014a painful routine that brought temporary relief but also carried the risk of iron overload, which can damage vital organs.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His parents were desperate for a cure. His haemoglobin stabilised at 10.0 g\/dL\u2014healthy for his age. For the first time in years, he no longer needed blood transfusions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"a-historic-milestone-for-india\">A Historic Milestone for India<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><p align=\"justify\">Akshoy\u2019s case is believed to be the first documented instance in India where a child was successfully cured using cord blood from a sibling conceived specifically through PGD and PGM.
